Our staff will be able to give you more detailed advice on site and suggest alternative experiences.

Yes, there is a minimum height limit, which varies from experience to experience. For one of the Madeira VR Experiences, the minimum height is 130cm. Our staff will be able to give you more detailed advice on site and suggest alternative experiences.

  • Read, listen to and follow all instructions for using virtual reality equipment provided by the staff.
  • A comfortable virtual reality experience requires an unaltered sense of movement and balance.
  • If you have a history of epilepsy, seizures, loss of consciousness, other epilepsy-related symptoms, are pregnant, very old, have pre-existing binocular vision abnormalities, psychiatric disorders, heart disease, have a pacemaker, programmable valves ("shunts"), hearing aids, defibrillators, other implanted medical device or any other serious medical condition, consult a doctor before participating in virtual reality experiences.
  • Do not participate in virtual reality experiences or use virtual reality equipment and goggles if you are tired, drowsy, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, hungover, having digestive problems, emotionally stressed or anxious, or have a skin condition, eye condition (conjunctivitis, etc.), cold, flu, headache, migraine or earache, as these symptoms may impair your experience, that of other users and increase susceptibility to adverse symptoms.
  • Some people (around 1 in 4,000) may be sensitive to flashing lights, flickering, flashes of light, noises or geometric shapes and patterns, which can trigger epilepsy, dizziness, seizures, epileptic seizures or fainting while using virtual reality glasses or watching 3D videos, even if they have never had a seizure or fainted before, or have no history of seizures or epilepsy. These seizures are more common in children and young people under the age of 20.

  • Adults should supervise children to ensure that they comply with the recommendations provided by adults and with health and safety guidelines.
  • Virtual reality equipment should not be used by children under the age of 10, as they are in a critical period of visual development. Consult your child's doctor or an ophthalmologist before allowing children under the age of 10 to use virtual reality equipment or view 3D video images.
  • Adults should monitor children during and after using virtual reality equipment to detect any symptoms, discomfort, limit the time of use and ensure that they take breaks.

To reduce the risk of injury or discomfort when using virtual reality equipment, always follow the instructions given by our staff and observe the following precautions:

  • When entering the Madeira Immersive Experiences virtual reality centre, store your personal belongings, bags, mobile phones and electronic devices in a locker. Keep the key with you. When you leave the centre, retrieve your personal belongings and leave the locker closed with the key in the lock.
  • Do not use mobile phones, mobile devices or photographic equipment during experiments. These can interfere with the functioning of your experiment and those around you. Electronic devices interfere with the experiments and the computer systems used.
  • Virtual reality equipment provides an immersive experience that can distract and block the view of the real environment.
  • Be aware of your surroundings before starting and while using virtual reality equipment. Be careful to avoid injury.
  • The use of virtual reality equipment can cause loss of balance.
  • Remember that the objects seen in the virtual environment may not exist in the real environment, so do not sit down, stand up or use the virtual objects for support.
  • For a safer experience, remain seated or immobile (when informed by staff), but you may walk when previously informed by staff and whenever using virtual reality equipment.
  • Serious injuries can occur if you trip, collide or bump into walls, furniture or other objects. Take precautions for the safe use of virtual reality equipment.
  • Take special care to ensure that you are not near other people, objects, steps, balconies, open doors, furniture or other objects that you could bump into or knock over while using - or immediately after using - the virtual reality equipment.
  • Remember that when using virtual reality equipment, you may not be aware that other people may be near you. Take steps to prevent other people, children or other obstacles from entering your play area while using virtual reality equipment.
  • Do not handle sharp, cutting, flammable or dangerous objects while using virtual reality equipment.
  • Make sure that the virtual reality goggles are correctly and comfortably fitted to your head and that you see a single clear image.
  • If you have limited vision, you can use your personal glasses during virtual reality experiences.
  • Start using the virtual reality goggles gradually to allow your body to adapt, and initially only use them for a few minutes.
  • As your confidence grows, you can extend the time you use the equipment and virtual reality glasses as you get used to virtual reality.
  • Looking around when you first enter a virtual reality experience can help you adjust to any small differences between your movements in the real world and your virtual reality experience.
  • Listening to sounds at high volumes can cause irreparable hearing damage. Due to the immersive nature of the virtual reality experience, do not use the sound of the virtual reality glasses at a high volume in order to maintain awareness of your surroundings and reduce the risk of hearing damage.
  • Do not shake the virtual reality equipment excessively, as it may lose calibration within the gaming area.

  • Stop using virtual reality equipment immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: seizures, loss of consciousness, eye strain, head or eye discomfort or pain, eye or muscle spasms, involuntary movements, altered, blurred or double vision, or other visual abnormalities, dizziness, migraines, disorientation, impaired balance, impaired hand-eye coordination, muscle spasms, increased salivation, nausea, dizziness, fainting, confusion, disorientation, drowsiness, fatigue or any symptoms similar to motion sickness.
  • The use of virtual reality equipment can cause muscle, joint and skin discomfort. If any part of your body becomes tired or sore while using the virtual reality equipment, or if you experience symptoms such as tingling, numbness, burning or stiffness, stop and rest before using the virtual reality equipment again.
  • Just like the symptoms people may experience after disembarking from a cruise ship, the symptoms of virtual reality exposure may become more noticeable hours after use. These post-use symptoms may include the symptoms mentioned above, as well as excessive drowsiness and decreased multifunctional ability. In this case, we recommend not using virtual reality equipment again until the symptoms have completely disappeared.
  • If you experience any of the above symptoms after using virtual reality, do not drive, operate machinery, engage in visually or physically demanding activities, or activities that require unaltered balance and hand-eye coordination (such as sports or cycling) until you have recovered from any symptoms.
